5S has evolved as a proven tool for achieving corporate excellence in a
competitive business environment. Though manufacturing firms tend to derive
maximum advantage out of this technique , those in the service sector also can
reap substantial gains by applying 5S principles.
5S is a workplace organization method that uses a list of five Japanese words:
seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu, and shitsuke which have been translated as "Sort",
"Set In order", "Shine", "Standardize" and "Sustain". Application of these
principles for improving workplace effectiveness is a competitive business
strategy in the present scenario.
5S just highlights the potential areas as well as benchmarks to enhance
productivity and quality in the workplace , facilitating cost and waste reduction
to result in overall competitiveness.
